A Brief Bio on Mark R. Edwards
Meet Mark
I was born in Baltimore, Maryland and raised in Cleveland Heights, Ohio and a now a renter in West Hollywood, California!
I love West Hollywood, because our city government is intentional in protecting and lifting up people with the greatest need and creating a dynamic local economy that allows us to invest in people. West Hollywood is a lot like where I was raised in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.
My parents moved us to Cleveland Heights (Heights) from Baltimore, MD shortly after the Supreme Court’s decision in Loving v. Virginia made my parent’s marriage legal in all states. Also, integration was taking place and the Heights government working with communities created a nonprofit coalition called the Heights Community Congress (HCC). They were organized to ensure an intentional integration, of which my mom was an active member. The work paid off and Cleveland Heights remains integrated to this day! This experience demonstrated the clear power of advocacy in coalition with large groups of community members.
My first experience in West Hollywood was an internship. I graduated from California State University, Northridge with a bachelor’s degree in Urban Studies with a concentration in public administration and community services. A vital part of the degree was internships. I was accepted by the West Hollywood Recreation and Parks department to run the Summer Youth Program in 1998. It was an amazing experience introducing youth to the employment process and gaining work experience.
My career reflects a dedication to public service and community advocacy. I’ve had the honor of serving West Hollywood as a Planning Commissioner and on the Historic Preservation Commission, helping guide decisions about housing and community, and economic development issues.
Professionally, I’ve gained extensive experience working in nonprofit leadership roles, city, county and federal government, the private sector, and operated my own business. Presently, I’m leading the policy and advocacy work at Arts for LA. My experience has taught me how to listen, collaborate, and deliver results.
I’m running for City Council because I care deeply about this city and I believe West Hollywood deserves thoughtful, prepared leadership. A leadership that brings people together and gets things done. I’ll always lead with respect, curiosity, and a commitment to our shared future.
